According to a recent report from Accenture, global investment in financial technology (fintech) ventures has more than tripled during the last five years — from under $930 million in 2008 to more than $2.97 billion in 2013. And the vast majority of investment in Europe is going to companies based in London.
The first 2015 meeting of Women in Telecoms & Technology (WiTT) featured a panel discussion of the key trends driving growth in fintech, including the move to a digital economy; the increasing importance of mobile and social; big data analytics; and the block chain and cryptocurrencies. Who are the new players looking to take market share away from incumbents? Which are the hottest areas in fintech today?
Our panel was chaired by WiTT member Isabel Evans, a partner in the International Banking and Finance Group of Bird & Bird. Panelists included:
- Jess Williamson, Director, Barclays Accelerator Powered by Techstars;
- Elly Hardwick, CEO, Credit Benchmark;
- Nezahat Gultekin, Head of Capital Markets, Investments and Strategy; Future Fifty Programme; Tech City UK
The meeting was held at Bird & Bird, 15 Fetter Lane, London EC4A 1JP. We would like to thank Bird & Bird for hosting.
